Getting Ready for a Blue World Atlantic Flight.
Getting Ready for a Blue World Atlantic Flight.

In the vibrant heart of Chicago, our freighter operation orchestrated a remarkable display of efficiency and precision. Our plane touched down on the tarmac at 12:19 PM, and by 12:29 PM, our aircraft was parked and ready, with our 53-foot trailer positioned alongside. This moment, captured against the backdrop of a radiant Chicago sky, symbolized our meticulous coordination and unwavering readiness.

Just 18 minutes later, our first truck began its journey to JAS ORD, marking the swift commencement of the cargo’s journey. In collaboration with our dedicated partners, our team worked with remarkable precision to ensure every kilogram was meticulously handled. By 1:59 PM, the flight was empty, and we had successfully offloaded an impressive 95,549 kilograms in just 1 hour and 30 minutes.

In the realm of freight forwarding, where both speed and safety are crucial, this feat exemplifies our commitment to excellence. Our efficient turnaround not only highlights our core values but also underscores our promise of rapid and secure cargo handling.

As we enjoyed the beautiful Chicago day, with our trailer and plane framed in a perfect snapshot of efficiency, it became clear: we don’t just move cargo; we redefine the standards of reliability and efficiency. Our streamlined operations significantly reduce tarmac time, especially for temperature-controlled shipments, ensuring optimal conditions every step of the way.

Here’s to achieving flawless results with every shipment—where success transcends promise and becomes a stunning reality.

Electrifying Collaboration: Transporting over 60 Tons of Lithium-Ion Batteries for Electric Vehicle Production

In a display of cross-functional teamwork, several internal teams at JAS worked closely to execute a seamless transportation operation. The collaborative effort aimed to transport a large number of Lithium-Ion Batteries (UN 3480, Class 9) from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA), supporting a leading European Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) producing electric vehicles (EV).

Challenge:

The automotive landscape is transitioning towards sustainable solutions, with electric vehicles leading the way. However, sourcing the necessary components, such as Lithium-Ion Batteries, often poses significant logistical challenges due to their hazardous nature, requiring compliance with stringent regulations and safety protocols. A leading OEM in Europe required a substantial shipment of batteries from the US to support its EV production. Blue World Atlantic charter flight operations presented an opportunity to avoid relying on a market yielding minimal results with minimum quantities per flight.

JAS's Response:

Recognizing the urgency and importance of the situation, the JAS teams quickly created a plan. The batteries were carefully packed, labeled, and documented in accordance with local and global regulations. Additionally, a plan using JAS' existing Blue World Atlantic weekly charter was organized, allowing for direct transportation and minimizing the risk associated with intermediate stops.

Results and Impact:

After taking over the project as airlines simultaneously announced embargoes on cargo containing Lithium-Ion Batteries, the team successfully transported the Lithium-Ion Batteries on JAS Blue World Atlantic weekly charter, allowing the customer's supply chain to remain uninterrupted.

JAS recently executed a complex air freight project linking China, the United Kingdom, and France for a major French pharmaceutical launch, demonstrating expertise in handling large shipments.
JAS Successfully Executes Air Freight Project Linking China, Great Britain & France

Recently, JAS successfully executed a large air freight project connecting China, the United Kingdom, and France. The project catered to a prominent French pharmaceutical company's highly anticipated product launch, highlighting JAS's ability to handle large shipments with precision and efficiency. The Toulouse Branch Manager of JAS France, Khalid Aabiza, played a key role in securing the business and overseeing the project's execution.

The French pharmaceutical company's product launch in the United Kingdom required the transportation of a vast number of paper containers/cups from China. With over 400 pallet cargoes divided into three lots, each carrying strict deadlines, the challenge was immense. The urgency to meet these deadlines and the need for high visibility and real-time updates on cargo status presented critical objectives for the customer.

Addressing these challenges head-on, JAS provided a comprehensive solution that showcased its expertise and commitment to excellence. Through effective communication with the shipper in China, the JAS team optimized the capacity plan, ensuring flexibility and streamlined execution. The JAS team offered a full solution within just five days, leveraging optimal carrier combinations and strategic partnerships with multiple large airlines.

To meet the customer's requirements for real-time updates and high visibility, the JAS Shanghai team collaborated closely with teams in France and the United Kingdom, sharing daily planning and monitoring sheets. This seamless communication and coordination played a key role in the project's success.

The project culminated in the safe and timely delivery of over 500 pallets and 700+ CBM of cargo to London Heathrow Airport (LHR). JAS's execution and dedication earned appreciation from the customer, solidifying its position as a reliable partner for complex logistics operations.

With this success, JAS reaffirms its position as an industry leader capable of handling large-scale logistics with precision and timeliness. As the logistics landscape continues to evolve, JAS's commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence remains strong.

Left: Caroline Söderholm Right: Christina Jopengrip
JAS Sweden Team Members Share Tips for Handling Dangerous Goods Shipments

JAS has numerous in-house experts in a wide range of fields required for the transportation of various commodities and goods. An essential area of expertise is managing consignments containing hazardous materials.

Caroline Söderholm and Christina Jopengrip, two highly experienced forwarders at JAS Sweden, specialize in dangerous goods for air freight and assist our clients in making the right decisions when shipping these commodities.

They spoke with us about their experiences and important considerations regarding booking and shipping dangerous goods by air.

Please tell us about yourselves and your role at JAS Sweden

Christina: For the past eight years, I have worked as an import and export specialist for Air, Sea, and Rail shipments at our office in Sundsvall.

Caroline: I have worked as an Air Export Specialist at our Arlanda/Stockholm office since 2017. I have been in the forwarding industry since 2005, handling import and export air consignments.

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous Goods is the term used for substances and objects that, if not handled properly during transport, can cause harm to people, the environment, or property.

The classification of dangerous goods is based on criteria outlined in the UN model regulations. These goods are then divided into different classes depending on their nature and level of danger.

You are both experts with dangerous goods, primarily by air. What training is required to be able to work with dangerous goods shipments?

Caroline: You have to be approved for an IATA DGR course (7.3 Function: Personnel Responsible for Processing or Accepting Dangerous Goods Consignments), where there is a requirement that you attend it every two years to be up to date with the latest rules and regulations.

Christina: It is good to have attended stage 1 and 2 courses for Lithium batteries.

There are a lot more batteries (for electric cars, hybrid cars, electric bicycles, laptops, mobile phones, cameras, etc.) compared to previously. And many of them are transported by air, so the rules have become much stricter. Did you know, for example, that there is a difference between sending only batteries, batteries packed with equipment, and batteries packed in equipment?

How do you help customers with dangerous goods transportation?

Caroline: We collaborate with our dangerous goods partner, Dangerous Goods Management (DGM), to assist and advise our clients on how to properly package their goods in accordance with current regulations, as well as identifying necessary documentation.

What would you say is the main difference between handling dangerous goods and non-hazardous goods as a forwarder when it comes to air transportation?

Christiana: Compliance with IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulation (DGR) is mandatory for air shipments of dangerous goods. This includes following strict guidelines for classification, marking, packaging, labeling, and documentation of hazardous shipments. Additionally, certain states or airlines may have specific restrictions or rules that must be followed. In other words, handling hazardous goods is more complex than handling non-hazardous goods.

What information do you need when contacting you for a dangerous goods transport, and what responsibility does the customer have according to law?

Christiana: As the shipper/supplier is always ultimately responsible for their goods, we must be clear about what can and cannot be shipped and how.

Caroline: When booking a shipment that includes dangerous goods, the customer must provide a "Shippers Declaration for Dangerous Goods" for air transport. This declaration helps us determine the correct pricing and routing based on how the goods are packaged. It's important to note that different rules apply for flights that use passenger aircraft versus freighters, which are known as Cargo Aircraft Only.

What are the risks of transporting dangerous goods by air?

Caroline: The properties of dangerous goods are so hazardous that they can jeopardize the aircraft itself and even the safety of individuals on board an aircraft. Some goods may be unable to endure the effects of turbulence and high pressure, making it necessary to pack them in specially approved containers designed for dangerous goods.

Many everyday household items can be classified as dangerous goods for air transportation. What are some examples of these items, and how does JAS help ship them?

Christiana: Some examples of dangerous goods you may not know are nail polish, hair spray and dry shampoo, alcohol, matches/lighters, thermometers, backpacks with built-in chargers, and E-cigarettes…the list goes on.

We collaborate with partners such as DGM to provide guidance on how to ship small quantities of hazardous items as limited or excepted quantities instead of fully regulated dangerous goods. This allows for shipping with exceptions and reduces the labeling and packaging requirements, making it a more cost-effective option than shipping fully regulated dangerous goods.

Caroline: It's worth considering that our smartphones and tablets contain a built-in Lithium battery, which makes them sensitive items. Consequently, flight attendants typically instruct passengers to notify them if such items are dropped between the seats. Dropping a lithium battery on a hard surface may cause the particles to divide and potentially ignite a fire that is incredibly difficult to extinguish. In the end, though, it is the Pilot who ultimately decides which cargo is allowed on their flight.

Thank you for sharing with us today! It has been very interesting and given us plenty to consider when sending dangerous goods by airfreight.

For more information, or if you have questions on how to transport dangerous goods, please don’t hesitate to contact your local JAS representative.

JAS Hong Kong transports Gabarron artwork
Fine Art Receives VIP Treatment

When a world-renowned artist needs safe, secure, and quick transport of 11 fiberglass art sculptures, JAS Spain is the logistics provider of choice. JAS Spain teamed up with JAS Hong Kong to ensure the shipment of delicate art from Spanish artist Cristobal Gabarron reached its destination on time. The pieces are a part of Gabarron's "Might of the Right" collection which is being shown at Fine Art Asia on October 8-11.

Gabarron is best known for his landmark series, "Mille Formes à la Conquête de l'Espace" (A Thousand Shapes to Conquer Space), first shown in Cannes in 2017. The 76-year-old artist has a passion for equality and fairness, which has served as a driving force in his creativity. French art critic and philosopher Pierre Restany once called Gabarron, “a great humanist of color.” His art has been featured in global movements of unity and cooperation, including his large-scale mural, History of the Olympics, which was inaugurated at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Enlightened Universe, a steel globe surrounded by 70 colorful figures holding hands as a symbol of shared humanity was inaugurated by the secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, on October 25, 2015, in New York City’s Central Park. The piece was created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the U.N.

Since the show is an important event that only lasts a few days, the pieces needed to arrive on time. Gabarron provided the packaging and wooden crates he preferred using to ship his delicate pieces. JAS Spain’s team arranged for pick up and delivery as dedicated trucking and booked the shipment with an air-flying option. The artwork had only one transit airport up to its final destination to avoid additional manipulation of the pieces, which would have increased the risk for damage. Special cargo insurance designed for the artwork was provided by JAS Spain’s broker to cover the full value of the goods.

The cargo was ready for pickup at Gabarron’s warehouse in Valladolid on September 23. JAS Spain’s team ordered expedited same-day delivery to Madrid to avoid manipulation risk. Gabarron’s artwork departed on September 25 and arrived in Hong Kong on September 27. Considering the shipping issues currently facing logistics companies serving the APAC region, the team was considerably pleased with the two-day transport.

JAS Air Shipment
JAS Germany Coordinates Urgent Next Day Air Shipment

As the worldwide COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, Namibia is facing increasing challenges. As a result, the JAS Berlin office arranged air shipments of urgently needed medical equipment and supplies such as medical ventilators, masks, and PCR tests to be delivered to Namibia. The urgent air freight deliveries of 60 Colli (5,336 Kgs) were coordinated for uplift by Germany's Michael Hommens/JAS Forwarding Berlin in partnership with the client.

JAS has already coordinated five successful shipments from the Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Germany to the local airport. An additional shipment of medical supplies occurred Week 31 (August 2-8, 2021) for arrival at another local airport. Furthermore, the team is working with the client to coordinate another delivery of a 1x40' container of goods from Germany to Namibia to provide additional support for the ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts.

At JAS, we know that our people make a difference and are proud of the hard work and dedication of the Berlin team, who helped make this next-day delivery successfully!

JAS hauls luxury vehicle for customer
JAS Insures Successful Delivery Despite Restrictions

When a client needed to ship a luxury vehicle from Belgium to Japan while facing challenges due to COVID restrictions, they knew they could turn to JAS to get the job done while still receiving best-in-class service.

The client, who is located in the UK, needed to ship a valuable luxury car from Belgium to Japan. Under normal circumstances, the client would be there in person to oversee the loading and collection of the vehicle. However, COVID restrictions limited their ability to travel since Belgium recognizes the UK as a high-risk country for COVID. Therefore, the customer asked our JAS team to step in for them at the collection and delivery of the car.

The first step was planning so the customer knew the names of the JAS representatives in Belgium who would be there that weekend to collect the car from the car shop. This allowed the car shop to know who would be collecting the car for transport to prevent unauthorized trucks from collecting the vehicle on behalf of the buyer and stealing the car.

The weekend the shipment occurred, members of the JAS Belgium team went to the actual loading site to check the car's vehicle identification number (VIN) and send the client pictures of the luxury car. In addition, as per the customer's request, they made sure the proper car cover was on the vehicle, ensuring the car would not be scratched or damaged during transport.  JAS team members kept the client informed throughout the process as they followed the vehicle's loading onto the plane.

This challenge demonstrates the importance of the collaboration and communication between JAS teams and the client to ensure best-in-class service despite the challenging situation posed by COVID restrictions. Congratulations to our team members on another successful delivery!

Flight Operations Utilized for Industrial Client

JAS prides itself on the ability to make a difference for their customers. So, when an industrial sector client reached out to them about moving a 650 CBM piece of machinery from the USA to Italy, JAS was able to quickly mobilize and find the most efficient solution, in the most challenging market.

The shipment was coordinated by the JAS Como branch in Italy in cooperation with the JAS Memphis branch in the USA.

Due to its nonstandard dimensions, the shipment required five Blue World Atlantic flights from Chicago to Frankfurt. Once the cargo arrived in Frankfurt, a total of 15 trucks were used for its final delivery to the client in Italy.

JAS offers weekly flight operations on the transatlantic trade lane with predictable lead times to and from the USA and Europe. These flights provide guaranteed capacity and control and each flight offers a hub solution so transfers can be arranged to and from multiple origin and destination points.

Thanks to the collaboration of both the JAS USA and JAS Italy teams, the customers' demands were successfully met and the shipment arrived safely and on time.

Runway worker and airplane
JAS Netherlands and Aviagen Get Creative

Since the beginning of the first Covid-19 wave, freight forwarders in the Netherlands faced issues with finding space within limited flights capacities from and to Amsterdam. JAS Amsterdam dedicated themselves to be flexible and creative to find the best solutions for their clients. Utilizing our extended JAS network and with the help of other offices in Europe like JAS Frankfurt, have arranged a weekly charter to provide our clients with the service they required throughout these difficult times.

One of our clients, Aviagen Limited, for whom JAS AMS builds specialty aircraft pallets containing day-old chicks, had a peak in shipments during the first half of the year. During that period, JAS Amsterdam handled more than 10,000 boxes and over 700,000-day-old chicks. All served with options through the BENELUX region.

This peak was almost parallel with the peak of Covid-19. The JAS Amsterdam team faced two major challenges. First, to find the required space, and second, to travel within the region while the travel restrictions were the strictest. Negotiations were taking place on a continuous basis with all airlines that are able to handle life animals such as day-old chicks.

In the middle of the restrictions in March, JAS had our first shipment for this peak from Belgium, Liege airport. JAS AMS went with a team to build up the ULD’s with one purpose, to deliver this shipment safely, and in time.

A couple of days later, the JAS team had to head to the south of the Netherlands for a full charter flight from Maastricht (MST), The Netherlands to Abidjan (ABJ), Côte d’Ivoire. This flight contained 7 ULD positions that were built into a Boeing 737F. 749 boxes and over 50.000 chicks. Which was again, safely delivered to the client.

This marked the beginning of a successful period, in which the JAS team made the impossible possible, and went above and beyond to fulfil our responsibility to our client. Today we continue these efforts through a wave of the avian influenza affecting the region and through the second wave of the pandemic. Nevertheless, we will continue providing the support and dedication our clients require. At JAS, people make the difference!

JAS Introduces Blue World Atlantic

The current pandemic has caused shipping disruptions across the globe.

With a 70% reduction in passenger flights since February 2020, the overall global air freight capacity is down about 25% from this time last year.  Limited space on limited flights means frequent delays and interruptions of supply chains globally.

With the unpredictable availability of cargo space, how do we regain control of air freight to ensure service in such a critical time?

The traditional air freight model is no longer a realistic option, instead Flight Operations are the key for maintaining a reliable and uninterrupted supply chain by providing door-to-door control of the shipping process. With a Flight Operation, every step of the process - from the time the cargo is picked up to its final delivery - is meticulously managed by the service provider.

Shipments are processed through facilities controlled by the service provider, both at origin and destination. This system avoids the typical congestion at airport hubs, reduces overall transit time, and increases control.

The aircraft themselves offer unmatched flexibility to meet all cargo needs. Freighters have the capability to move normal and specialized cargo such as dangerous goods, oversized pieces, and shipments requiring refrigeration such as perishable and pharma.

Lastly, a prime network of delivery options carries the cargo to its ultimate destination.

In early August JAS introduced BLUE WORLD ATLANTIC, a weekend roundtrip Flight Operation between Chicago and Frankfurt, utilizing B 747 – 400 F Nose-Load for optimum loading capabilities. The BLUE WORLD ATLANTIC prime schedule is the best solution for supporting customers in the transatlantic air freight corridor!

If your business could benefit from a regular flight operation in the transatlantic corridor contact a local JAS representative for more information.

JAS South Africa Aids in Critical JAS Italy PPE Shipment

During the peak of the Italian Covid-19 crisis, JAS South Africa received instructions from JAS Italy to handle an urgent PPE shipment for the PROTEZIONE CIVILE ITALIANA. 11,343 cartons containing surgical masks needed to be uplifted from Durban, transported to Johannesburg and sent by airfreight to Italy.

The necessary arrangements with JAS South Africa’s transporter were swiftly made and all of the cargo was uplifted on 12 trucks and moved up to Johannesburg. Upon arrival, the merchandise was palletized into two shipments, respectively of 251 and 154 Pallets. Simultaneously, negotiations were taking place with various airlines for Charter options and our long-term partner, Cargolux, was chosen as the airline of choice. The two shipments were then booked on two Charters, the first one departing on the 21st of March and the second on the 28th of March. Arrangements with Cargolux continued being processed as relevant traffic rights were needed to be obtained in order for the Charters to move directly into Italy from South Africa.

The first shipment was delivered to Cargolux on the 19th of March, and the flight departed as scheduled. The second shipment proved to be more challenging, as South Africa was on the verge of a Nationwide lockdown, which began on the 27th of March. However, thanks to JAS South Africa’s efforts, the shipment made it out on time and was successfully loaded on board the flight which departed on schedule. This second shipment was on the last Cargolux flight out of South Africa, which was Day 1 of the South Africa lockdown.

Job well done and congratulations to the JAS South Africa Team! People continue to make the difference!

JAS Supports the Medical Industry

On March 31st the HARTMANN GROUP began utilizing JAS’ charted flight operations to facilitate the supply of masks throughout Europe. Based in Heidenheim, Germany, HARTMANN is a leading provider of medical and hygiene products, with its core expertise being in wound treatment, infection prevention, surgical supplies, and personal healthcare.

HARTMANN turned to JAS to help it supply critically needed N95 masks to the governments of Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.  These shipments are flown by JAS from Shanghai to Frankfurt for distribution to not only government entities, but also to pharmacies for wider distribution to non-governmental organizations and the public at large.

JAS continues to leverage its expertise in chartered flight operations, export and import clearance, and general distribution services for HARTMANN as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to put pressure on supply chains throughout the globe. JAS is committed to supporting efforts of customers like HARTMANN as they work to provide medical supplies when and where they are needed most.

When asked to comment on PPE supply chain challenges, Thomas-Garry Stiller, Senior VP of Procurement at HARTMANN remarked, “Sourcing those masks is one thing, but how to get them to Europe? Answer: JAS.”

Italian Protezione Civile Entrusts JAS with Relief Shipment

JAS is proud to say that Protezione Civile trusted JAS with shipments vital to keeping the supply chain functioning. JAS is managing charter flights from and to several countries around the world to ensure continuity of the supply chain during the current emergency situation we, as a species face.

JAS China and JAS Italy cooperated once more in March 2020 to handle another chartered flight of relief supplies and JAS Italy is also providing domestic distribution of relief material to all the Italian regions. Specifically, JAS handled another charter flight (AN124) departed from Pudong Int'l Airport on 31st March, carrying disaster-relief materials. Off-Loading phase of this Charter flight was supervised by a special JAS employee, our own JAS Italy Managing Director, Leonardo Baldi. Baldi was the keynote speaker during an interview done for a national Italian television broadcast. During his speech, Baldi explained how JAS Italy is acting on behalf of the Italian Civil Defense and distributing relief material for many hospitals and regions throughout Italy.

JAS is proud to deliver logistics support to the Italian Protezione Civile, whom work so hard day in and day out to support the entire Italian population, and to provide the aid needed by doctors and nurses working around the clock to save lives.

JAS Charters Relief Supplies from China to Italy

These are difficult times we are living through amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has already brought major economic disruptions around the world and has particularly hard hit the country of Italy and the Italian population.  While this is happening around the world JAS is actively working to support the replenishment of important disaster-relief materials desperately needed in all Italian hospitals.

Thanks to the longtime partnership between our Chinese and Italian Subsidiaries,  JAS China and JAS Italy were able to organize a chartered cargo plane within a limited time frame that departed on the 26th of March, 2020 from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China carrying disaster-relief materials needed to support doctors, nurses, and those working  on the front line against this invisible enemy, COVID-19.

This shipment included 1,000,000 Medical-grade N95 respiratory masks, 2,000,000 disposable face masks and 111,000 medical-grade disposable protective clothing, providing essential protection to healthcare professionals working  around the clock in all the hospitals around Italy.

JAS is proud to be able to provide prompt responses thanks to our hardworking team around the world. Special thanks to our JAS China and JAS Italy teams for the hard work they put in to make this charter possible. At JAS People Make the Difference and never has that been more true than now.

Together we stand.

JAS Offers Air-Sea Solutions to/from China

JAS Worldwide, together with their business partner Global Airlift Solutions, has managed another successful and urgent charter operation from the USA to China carrying important medical and Coronavirus outbreak relief goods.

The Boing 747-400 departed on Saturday Feb 21 2020 from the Chicago O' Hare International Airport and arrived at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Sunday Feb 23rd at 16:51 local time. The plane carried 100 tons of freight, of which 50% were relief goods such as facial masks and disinfectants.

“JAS is proud to be a able to provide a quick and reliable solution for our customers that want to support their employees and business partners during a difficult time”, said Senior Director for Air Freight for JAS USA,
