Over the past few months, Sommer Sampson (TSA IACSC) and Margaret Christian (TSA A-IACSC) have been traveling to help implement additional screening facilities to new and current JAS locations.

Air cargo screening demands continue to be on the rise since the ICAO 100% Screening Mandate of ALL outbound Air Cargo in 2021. To better meet customer demands, JAS TSA Compliance successfully rolled out 3 new Certified Cargo Screening Facilities (CCSF’s), with 2 more additional openings being planned for the near future. These new facilities (located in Houston, Chicago, and Los Angeles) will add flexibility and increased options for our customers during the ever-increasing challenges that the industry continues to navigate. JAS longtime partner, Global K9 Protection Group (GK9PG) helps to make this happen by using canine as the primary screening method. JAS is also one of the few Indirect Air Carriers (IACs) approved to accept and handle Impracticable to Screen (ITS) cargo, giving us even more flexibility in our offerings to customers.

While heightened screening demands continue to challenge the industry, JAS is confident and ready due to our (now) 8 CCSF locations, multiple methods of screening, and years of experience in the Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP). Recently, JAS France organized a visit of the Fos port in Marseille with some customers. More than 30 people were welcomed on site by the JAS France sales team to learn more about the port setup and operations.

Fos port is France’s main port on the Mediterranean sea, gateway to the southern part of France. It currently handles 1.5 million TEU yearly while its capacity was recently increased to 3 million TEU, anticipating a fast growth in the coming years.

Being able to actually experience the activity of the port provides a better understanding of the current shipping environment. The fast-paced environment continues 24/7 as workers strive to meet the many demands. Despite the pressure the top priorities remain meeting schedules while observing safety guidelines both at dock and at sea.

As the team watched the vessel mooring, the dock became an anthill of activity with a dozen of straddles carrying containers back and forth. It was impressive to see all the effort and coordination required to help the goods reach their final destination on time.

JAS France would like to thank The Port of Marseille Fos and Port Synergy – EuroFos for arranging this visit! Many thanks as well to our esteemed customers who joined us for this day together!

After two years of social distancing imposed by the pandemic, Mr. Leonardo Baldi, JAS Italy CEO, organized the 2022 Annual Mid-Year Management Meeting.

At this meeting, the JAS Italy Management Team was provided with further results and directions, along with highly detailed market updates, thanks to the incredible participation of our Airline and Steam Ship Line Partners.

During the meeting the team also celebrated the retirement of JAS Italy colleagues: Franco Pinzani (Ocean Freight Director) and Maurizio Pedrinazzi (Airfreight Director). Together with two very special guests Mr. Biagio Bruni, JAS Chairman & Founder, and Mr. Graeme Robinson, EVP Operations of JAS Worldwide, we all congratulated with them on this important milestone.

Such a special occasion required a prestigious location. The FERRARI Maranello Museum was selected not only because of its beautiful location, but because it exemplifies the spirit and message given from Mr. Baldi to the entire management team: “Teamwork and continued improvement to achieve our goals.”

Short Sea Shipping: A sustainable choice
August 15, 2022
As many shippers within the European countries look for innovative and sustainable transport options for moving goods, short sea shipping can be a practical option.
As many shippers within the European countries look for innovative and sustainable transport options for moving goods, short sea shipping can be a practical option.

Did you know that shipping by shortsea can reduce your overall carbon footprint by as much 80% when compared to traditional road freight?

For those who traditionally use only road freight to move goods across long distances such as between South of Europe and The Nordics and Baltics, short sea shipping can be an innovative and sustainable transport option that can help reduce a shippers overall environmental impact.

With one feeder vessel carrying the equivalent of 500 truckloads of goods, short sea shipping provides great savings in both in terms of cost and CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it can reduce pressure on heavily congested roads helping mitigate issues associated with the truck driver shortage and increasing fuel rates.

With one organization managing all European transport solutions customers have access to one single point of contact designated to managing your flows regardless of transport mode. This opens up a range of alternatives on the same trade lane allowing for tailor-made solutions that best fit your needs.

Our team members are here to help you navigate the maze of different options and provide professional insights, while helping you implement and manage the transport solutions once a decision is taken.

JAS’s Transatlantic Air Cargo Service Used to Transport Oversized and Time-Sensitive Cargo
August 3, 2022
JAS offices across the world recently had an opportunity to come together to help a customer with an oversized and time sensitive shipment.
JAS offices across the world recently had an opportunity to come together to help a customer with an oversized and time sensitive shipment.

JAS offices across the world recently had an opportunity to come together to help a customer with an oversized and time-sensitive shipment. In this case, the customer, an automotive manufacturer, needed production line machinery moved from Germany to Texas, United States.

The shipment included 11 pieces which weighed 5.1 tons and measured over 30 CBM. Although some pieces were oversized, the team was able to create a tailor-made solution using JAS's Blue World Atlantic services.

The JAS MFE (Southwest) Team and our Trade Lane Manager, joined forces with colleagues in Germany to orchestrate this time-sensitive project.

JAS Bad Waldsee, the origin office, successfully picked up the cargo on July 26 in Dornstadt, Germany. This facility does not allow closed containers to be loaded as it does not have dock doors. Therefore, an open truck was used to transfer the cargo to the Frankfurt Airport (FRA). There the Gateway Team was prepared to receive the cargo, which departed on July 28 via the JAS Blue World Atlantic Air Charter Program. The shipment arrived the next day in Chicago, Illinois (ORD), where the United States Gateway Team coordinated with the JAS McAllen Branch (Texas, United States) to receive the shipment over the weekend. This close collaboration made it possible for the needed equipment to arrive at the end customer's facility in Texas on August 1, a day earlier than required.

Alfonso Ortiz, Business Development Manager, said of the shipment, "We are happy to have been able to find a solution for our customer and to have safely and successfully delivered the cargo ahead of schedule."

Our people really do make the difference!

JAS now has access to additional green transportation solutions throughout Europe which are all managed by one team, helping customers to create an even smarter supply chain.

JAS now has access to additional transportation solutions throughout Europe, including:

  • Short Sea Shipping Services
  • Intermodal Shipping Services
  • Sustainable Road Transportation Services

With one team managing all transportation solutions in Europe, customers have access to a single point of contact that can manage your flow of goods regardless of transportation method. This opens up a range of alternatives on the same trade lane and allows for tailor-made solutions that best fit your needs.

For instance, for those with sustainability as a top priority, your single point of contact might suggest a shortsea or intermodal solution as a default method of transportation while still having the option of road transport if needed.

Perhaps, you have heavy cargo to be transported over long distances. In this case, a shortsea solution might be the most cost-effective and sustainable alternative. However, road transportation is likely the most flexible alternative if time is critical and planning is complex.

Whatever your needs, our team members are equipped to help customers create an even smarter supply chain.

JAS Brazil Helps Coordinate Ex-Works Import
July 21, 2022
The machinery arrives in Brazil for further transportation.
The machinery arrives in Brazil for further transportation.

Recently, JAS Brazil coordinated the Ex Works (EXW) import of machinery which was used to expand a plastics line.

The movement of this type of load is a complex activity, due to the many moving parts.

As a provider of global logistics solutions, the team in Brazil, in coordination with JAS USA, was able to guide the customer through the challenges of this type of shipment. Transporting this load involved advising the exporter, maintaining “on-time” communication between team members in the USA and Brazil, and monitoring the entire operation from start to finish.

A Tailor-Made Solution

In order to successfully deliver the load from New York, USA to Paranagua, Brazil the team chose to ship the machinery in a flat rack container. This allowed for the safe transport as flat racks are designed to move loads which are large and heavy all while providing flexible shipping options.

With a total transit time of 41 days, the load safely and successfully arrived at its destination within the established deadline.

A global team of logistics professionals

When it comes to complex transports, our team members are in their element and ready to provide best-in-class service no matter what is being shipped. To best serve customers all across the globe scale, JAS has branches in more than worldwide working hand in hand. It was this close collaboration between the team members that ensured a safe, successful, and timely delivery to the customers total satisfaction.

Green Solutions for Wine Logistics
July 8, 2022
As a part of the larger move towards more sustainable wine production, JAS offers short sea shipping services as an innovative transportation alternative to road freight.
As a part of the larger move towards more sustainable wine production, JAS offers short sea shipping services as an innovative transportation alternative to road freight.

Wine has been produced in the Iberian Peninsula for many centuries.

Throughout Portugal, there are fourteen Delimited Wine Regions. Due to unique geography of the area, a variety of quality wines such as sparkling wines, white wines, red wines, rosé wines, and different kinds of vinegar can be found.

In 2015, Portugal’s Alentejo Region launched its award winning “Alentejo Wine Sustainability Program” (PSVA) in the region’s vineyards, in part, to promote more sustainable wine production environment.

As part of this move towards more sustainable wine production, JAS offers short sea shipping services as an innovative transportation alternative to road freight.

The service operates from Porto in Portugal to the Nordic region. Cargo for the Nordic market is consolidated from all over Spain and Portugal, where it is then shipped to Gothenburg for further distribution in the Nordics.

“This sustainable service option is a way for shippers to reduce direct emissions but also mitigate congested roads and shortage of drivers. It is our ambition to make it simple for our clients to switch to sustainable alternatives without having to recreate their entire supply chain, says Ari Malvela, Head of Road Freight.

Less than container load (LCL) allows you to ship smaller quantities more frequently. With weekly departures and fast transit times it is easier than ever to build supply chains that are both efficient and sustainable.

“Can we afford not to become more sustainable? This logistics solution is part of our initiative “Green Solutions” and reduces your environmental footprint up to 80% when compared to using road freight. One feeder vessel carries the equivalent of 500 truckloads, reducing the pressure on congested roads as well as the environment,” says Stefan Larsen, Ocean Freight Manager.

Green Solutions for Road Freight Transport
July 7, 2022
The most rural areas in the world rely on road freight to transport goods from your warehouse to their doorstep.
The most rural areas in the world rely on road freight to transport goods from your warehouse to their doorstep.

More than 3 billion people worldwide live in rural areas. Road freight is the only mode of transport that can reach the most remote places across the globe. You never have to compromise flexibility and sustainability when shipping large volumes of goods over long or short distance.

Our road transport solutions serve Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. We leverage our extensive knowledge of the market and our independent positioning to create the perfect road freight solution.

What is road freight?

Road freight involves transporting goods from one location to another. Moving products via road freight is one of the oldest and most common delivery modes. Sometimes road freight is used in conjunction with air or sea freight methods to provide greater flexibility with delivery times.

There are two types of road freight:

  • Less Than Truckload (LTL) is common for smaller size cargo that can’t fill a truck on its own. LTL shipments can combine to fill a truckload and save you money.
  • Full Truck Load (FTL) is used for shipments sizes large enough to fill an entire truck. FTL also can be used to move goods on a time-sensitive schedule even if the truck isn’t full.

What are the advantages of transporting by road freight?

Range and flexibility are two of the biggest advantages of transporting by road freight. When flexibility is your top priority, road freight is the only transport mode capable of reaching into the most rural areas. Regardless of whether you have LTL or FTL needs, road freight is the most flexible way to handle schedules and volumes.

Besides adaptability, the other benefits of choosing road freight shipping include:

  • Door-to-door service. It doesn’t matter where the delivery needs to go. Road freight is the most efficient way to move cargo door-to-door in any area, including the most rural locations.
  • Maximum traceability. GPS and other fleet management software allows for the easy location and tracking of cargo along the route. The real-time information provided allows you to anticipate problems and quickly find solutions.
  • Speed. Other means of transportation might be faster, but road freight is more agile, which can be important when moving fragile cargo to the most remote areas.
  • Sustainability. Sophisticated and energy-efficient trucking solutions help you fulfill sustainability goals. You can rely on a fleet of eco-friendly trucks with high-technology advancements that meet EU standards for decreased emissions. A telematics system improves key areas like reduced idle time, driving within economy, cruise control, and engine load time.

Road freight = the perfect green solution

Road freight can be made both cost-efficient and eco-friendly. Loading goods directly into vehicles and transporting them straight to their destination reduces the risk of delays along the transport chain. Eliminating the need to stop at distribution terminals along the way speeds up delivery while keeping your shipment as green as possible.

If you’re looking for fast, reliable, and eco-friendly transportation method, reach out to your local sales representative to discuss solutions today.
