Current Situation

Two weeks into the crisis in the Red Sea, the situation continues to be critical and extremely dynamic. The world’s largest container carriers (VOCC’s) have chosen most of their voyages utilizing re-routing of their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.

  • The US led 10-nation coalition of navy’s named “Operation Prosperity Guardian” continues their efforts to protect the selective voyages transiting the Suez Canal.
  • While there have been no reported vessel attacks in the Red Sea in the last 48 hours, it is crucial to understand that the situation remains dynamic, and the risk of attacks remains high based on credible sources.
  • In addition to the extra operational cost for carriers going around the Cape of Good Hope, this will also affect the cost of the recently advised ETS surcharges due to longer routes resulting in higher emissions. Same surcharge is valid from last non-EU port to first EU port (and vice versa)

These incidents have increased the risk of shipping in the region, and we have seen action taken by most of the world's largest container carriers (VOCCs) to mitigate the risk for their employees and vessels operating in these waters.

Carrier Responses

Below is a recap of the current situation as announced by carriers today; however, the situation is very fluid and continues to evolve.

  • The carriers continue to re-route vessels with scheduled services from the Suez Canal around the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Maersk and CMA-CGM are currently devising plans for the gradual increase of vessels transiting the Suez Canal, carefully monitoring the security situation for safe passage.
  • A variety of surcharges have been announced by carriers in directly and indirectly impacted trade lanes, ranging from Peak Season to Operational Recovery to Contingency Adjustment surcharges to name a few.

Going Forward

This conflict continues to have significant implications for Global trade. The global carrier community is citing impact to the equipment pool, balance as well as a potential vessel shift to facilitate operational network needs. JAS will continue to monitor the situation and keep you appraised accordingly.

Celebrating a Greener Tomorrow: In 2023, our collective commitment to sustainability shines bright. From renewable energy milestones to corporate volunteering, we're making waves for a healthier planet.
Celebrating a Greener Tomorrow: In 2023, our collective commitment to sustainability shines bright. From renewable energy milestones to corporate volunteering, we're making waves for a healthier planet.

In 2023, JAS Worldwide achieved meaningful milestones in sustainability by embodying a global commitment to responsible business practices. From forming a dedicated sustainability team to driving climate protection initiatives and social responsibility activities, JAS continues its journey as a responsible corporate citizen.

The year began with foundational steps, including the creation of a Worldwide Sustainability Team, and Materiality Analysis, identifying key sustainability issues. Followed by Sustainability Training to empower the sales force, integrating sustainable practices into customer interactions.

April saw JAS calculate its Scope 3 emissions automatically per shipment, gaining insights for targeted reductions. Moreover, JAS led a global Earth Day campaign, with colleagues undertaking projects like cleaning up streets and beaches – Corporate volunteering continued all year round, reinforcing the company's dedication to social responsibility with the Bruni Foundation.

Throughout the year, JAS nominated Sustainability Ambassadors to expand their reach on a local level, submitted to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and launched an internal Sustainability Community channel open to all employees to engage on sustainability topics.

In June, the company joined the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), committing to set science-based targets through towards Net Zero 2050. In July, JAS Sweden introduced the first electric truck, introducing greener road freight transportation options for our customers.

To enhance customer visibility and reduce emissions, JAS launched the JAS SmartHub emissions simulation tool in August. Simultaneously, an internal monthly Sustainability Webinar series was initiated to raise awareness among employees, ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront of the company's operations.

JAS joined the UN Global Compact in September highlighting its commitment to upholding universal principles on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The company actively deployed  external awareness campaigns and kicked off the Bruni Foundation's "Pay it Forward" program with the aim of promoting employee engagement while supporting local communities in need and the environment.

JAS continued its sustainability journey in October by submitting a new EcoVadis assessment, and launching the Sustainable Marine Biofuel insetting product, which enables our customers to save up to 100% CO2e reduction of their shipment (versus equivalent fossil fuels) through overallocation.

In November, JAS became a Blue Whales Blue Skies program ambassador, a program that aims to reduce vessel speeds along the California coast to protect endangered whales, reduce fuel consumption and regional greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the company launched an emissions reporting feature on the SmartHub platform, and provided top management with sustainability learning sessions.

JAS expresses sincere gratitude to all partners, customers, employees, and the community for the great collaboration and shared values on sustainability topics. Sustainability is a collective effort, and we appreciate the contributions of each stakeholder. Looking back on a transformative year, we express thanks for your collaboration, and we eagerly anticipate continuing to drive the sustainability agenda even further in 2024, building on the momentum of shared commitment and responsibility.

Current Situation

The Red Sea is a vital waterway for global trade, connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. However, it is also a hotspot for geopolitical tensions, piracy, and armed attacks. In the past few weeks, several incidents have occurred that have disrupted the maritime traffic and raised security concerns in the area. This is claimed to be a consequence of the Israel / Palestine conflict which sees attacks on commercial vessels thought to be headed for Israel.

  • A 10-nation coalition of navies are currently operating in the Red Sea to protect the waterways.
  • Attacks are still occurring from Yemen on vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb strait and are expected to continue.
  • Approximately 12% of global trade passes through the Suez Canal, which includes 30% of all container trade, making this a significant portion of all cargo shipped in containers being affected.

These incidents have increased the risk of shipping in the region, and we have seen action taken by most of the largest container carriers (VOCC’s) in the world to mitigate the risk for their employees and vessels operating in these waters.

Carrier Responses

Below is a recap of the current situation as announced by carriers as of today; however, the situation is very fluid and continues to evolve.

  • All major carriers (excluding OOCL and Cosco) have officially announced that they have ceased vessel operations in the Red Sea and passage through the Suez Canal. Vessels are either waiting in safe waters or being re-routed around the Cape of Good Hope. All vessel re-routings via the Cape will add on average 10-14 days of transit time unless the vessels significantly increase their speed.
  • Evergreen, COSCO and OOCL has stopped accepting cargo to Israel with immediate effect and until further notice.
  • No official statements yet from Cosco or OOCL on suspending service through the Red Sea; however, they both do appear to have stopped, as well, as per news outlet Caixin Global. Official notifications are expected later today.
  • Most major carriers are announcing rate increases on the affected Trade Lanes at various but significantly increased levels.

Going Forward

This conflict will have massive implications on global trade, and all shippers should expect serious delays, vessels out of place for weeks or months to come, and significantly increased costs on all services transiting the Red Sea. The full scope of the implications is unclear, but we at JAS will do our utmost to keep you updated on the situation as it unfolds and work with all customers and partners to provide the best solutions possible.

For any questions and concerns, please contact your local JAS office.

Leading the Way to a Sustainable Future on World Sustainable Transport Day
November 26, 2023
JAS Sweden Electric Truck
JAS Sweden Electric Truck

At JAS Worldwide, we understand the critical role supply chain and logistics companies play in shaping the present and future of sustainable transportation. As the global community comes together to celebrate World Sustainable Transport Day, we are proud to share our commitment to helping reduce the industry's environmental footprint by providing customers with sustainable solutions when transporting goods.

The Importance of Sustainable Transport

Sustainable transport is more than a buzzword; it is a responsibility that the Transport and Logistics industry has, as it contributes significantly to the global carbon footprint. With the world facing challenges such as dwindling fossil fuel resources, climate change, and the resulting impact on various communities, the need for sustainable transport solutions has never been more critical. As a global logistics and supply chain provider, we recognize our responsibility to lead by example and contribute to more sustainable operations.

A Cleaner Way Forward

Our partnership with GoodShipping showcases our dedication to sustainable transport solutions. By providing clients with the option to inset sustainable marine biofuel, we empower them to make eco-conscious choices for their shipping needs. These biofuels are produced from renewable sources and have a significantly lower environmental impact than conventional options, making them a responsible and sustainable choice for ocean freight.

Another step we've taken in our journey towards sustainability is the incorporation of electric trucks into our fleet. Electric trucks such as the type JAS uses are known for their low emissions, energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact, aligning seamlessly with our eco-conscious approach. In fact, when evaluating the entire Well-To-Wheel (WTW) cycle, an electric truck can achieve up to a 92% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional diesel trucks, marking a significant step toward more sustainable operations.

Network optimization is another way we reduce transport emissions, for example by embedding rail and ocean transport into the supply chain wherever possible, choosing the most efficient route for each stage of the journey, and maximizing freight utilization thereby reducing the need for additional trips. We consult with our customers to make informed decisions based on their business priorities and help them track their progress in reducing their emissions.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Sustainability isn't just about implementing a single solution; it's about embracing a holistic approach. At JAS, we integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of our business, from our daily operations to the choices we make in selecting partners and suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability.

We continually look for new technologies and practices that will further reduce our carbon footprint and improve the well-being of our people and the communities where we operate. Our commitment to sustainability is not a one-time effort but an ongoing journey toward a more responsible future.

Join Us in Celebrating World Sustainable Transport Day

As we commemorate World Sustainable Transport Day, we invite our partners, clients, and the global community to join us in embracing sustainable transport solutions. We are excited about the journey ahead and are committed to further innovations that will make the world of logistics more sustainable. Happy World Sustainable Transport Day!

Human Rights in Logistics and the Supply Chain
October 24, 2023
Human rights and sustainable supply chain management is crucial in our increasingly interconnected world.
Human rights and sustainable supply chain management is crucial in our increasingly interconnected world.

The importance of human rights in transportation and logistics cannot be emphasized enough in a world where global supply chains connect almost every corner of the world. Intricately linked with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the broader sustainability framework, this essential aspect guides us towards a fairer, more equitable world.

Human Rights: A Compass for Ethical Progress

Human rights generally encompass the fundamental rights and freedoms everyone should enjoy, irrespective of nationality, gender, ethnicity, or other distinguishing factors. These rights include the right to life, security, education, work, and more. They serve as a compass guiding our ethical progress in modern society, forming the foundation of a shared vision of justice, equality, and dignity.

The Supply Chain and Its Global Impact

A Supply Chain is a sequence of processes involved in producing and distributing a product and often stretches across the globe. Products, raw materials, and components travel thousands of miles to reach consumers. These highly developed supplier networks exemplify human innovation but also represent an ethical challenge.

The global nature of the supply chain often means that products cross through regions with varying levels of respect for human rights. This poses an imminent risk to human rights, whether through exploitative labor practices, human trafficking, environmental degradation, or other infringements. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is crucial for businesses committed to sustainable practices.

The Role of SDGs and Sustainable Supply Chain Management

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a framework for a more sustainable future. Among the 17 goals, several are closely tied to respecting human rights within the supply chain. At JAS Worldwide, we focus on SDGs 8 and 12 in this regard. Goal 8 emphasizes Decent Work and Economic Growth, which means ensuring ethical and fair employment practices throughout the supply chain. Goal 12 highlights Responsible Consumption and production, encompassing adherence to human rights and ethical standards in manufacturing and sourcing.

Sustainability in business is based on three key dimensions: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). The social aspect, which includes human rights, is as essential as the other two. At JAS Worldwide, our commitment to safeguarding human rights is not only a legal obligation but a core part of our Code of Business Conduct, Supplier Code of Conduct, Policies, and Business Practices. JAS recognizes that a sustainable supply chain upholds workers' rights, maintains safe working conditions, and minimizes any negative impact on local communities and the environment.

The Path Forward

This commitment revolves around the principle that the movement of goods in transportation and logistics should not compromise individual dignity and well-being. In our increasingly interconnected world, the impact of our actions extends far beyond the surface. By protecting human rights, we progress toward a sustainable future. This involves crafting our supply chain, along with our partnerships with customers and suppliers, as a moral compass to uphold human rights, combat global issues like human trafficking, and prevent other infringements on a global scale.

JAS Worldwide and GoodShipping Collaborate to Advance Sustainable Logistics and Decarbonization with Sustainable Marine Biofuel

[Atlanta, Oct. 20, 2023 ] — JAS Worldwide, a leading global logistics provider, is proud to announce its partnership with GoodShipping. This collaboration is focused on promoting a more environmentally responsible future for the logistics industry. Through this strategic partnership, JAS aims to make substantial reductions in the industry's carbon footprint by helping to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable marine biofuel solutions.

At JAS, environmental stewardship and the promotion of sustainable logistics are fundamental to our business. JAS’s investment in carbon reduction allows customers to see up to a 100% reduction in CO2e Well-to-Wake emissions when compared to their fossil fuel equivalents. This innovative approach is based on the concept of insetting. When utilizing insetting a customer chooses sustainable biofuel rather than the traditional fossil fuel. This eco-friendly biofuel is a renewable energy source that can power vessels without disrupting logistics operations.

Through the partnership with GoodShipping, JAS now has a carrier-independent solution that can be applied to any trade lane worldwide using the “one atmosphere approach” or “mass balance principle.” This means that if the biofuel supply is unavailable for the specific vessel transporting a customer’s shipment, an equivalent amount of biofuel, corresponding to the emissions generated by the shipment, is utilized in a biofuel enabled vessel. The end result is the same since the atmosphere is indifferent to which vessel is fueled.

The insetting service JAS’s customers can book facilitates the use of biofuel derived from 100% certifiable waste and residue streams. What sets this service apart is its independent audit verification process, which confirms the quality of the biofuel and ensures accurate carbon accounting. Through this approach, JAS strives to reduce actual emissions from its operations and help customers reduce Scope 3 emissions within their supply chain.

This partnership offers numerous advantages to cargo owners:

  • Simple: The mass balance principle and the blend of biofuels with conventional fossil fuels provide a carrier-independent solution with minimal disruption to logistics operations.
  • Impactful: Biofuel Insetting offers an immediate response within the same sector where emissions originate, enabling an effective reaction to global warming.
  • Credible: The utilization of biofuels aligns with global sustainability goals, and third-party audits ensure that sustainability claims are accurate and backed by credible assessments.
Andrea Goeman, SVP Sustainability, JAS Worldwide shared: "JAS Worldwide and GoodShipping are united in the mission to reduce carbon emissions to zero with Sustainable Marine Biofuel. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and to extend this decarbonization product to road transport, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainability in our customers' supply chain."
“We’re very happy to have started collaborating with an international player like JAS Worldwide,” says Alessandro Pierangeli, Commercial Manager at GoodShipping. Through our partnership, we can collectively offer companies a unique way to decarbonize their Scope 3 transportation emissions. We are truly excited to make a long term impact together.”

About JAS Worldwide:

JAS was founded in 1978 in Milan, Italy, and its global headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Over the last four decades, JAS has grown from regional roots to a global force in logistics covering all modes of transportation, including contract logistics and other sophisticated and digital-driven supply chain solutions. About GoodShipping:

GoodShipping accelerates the decarbonisation of shipping. GoodShipping enables companies to make an immediate climate impact by decarbonising their scope 3 emissions. Being world’s leading sustainable cargo initiative, GoodShipping facilitates a switch from fossil fuel to sustainable biofuel through an innovative concept called carbon insetting. This is based on the one atmosphere approach – the concept that all carbon is emitted into the same atmosphere. Any carrier running on biofuel, is a reduction of fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere. Therefore, it doesn’t matter which carrier runs on biofuel. The independent third-party audit ensures the clients' decarbonisation commitments are delivered. GoodShipping is proud to be part of FincoEnergies. Together delivering sustainable energy solutions to propel our customers’ transition towards a better world.

In recent years, corporate volunteering has gained prominence as a powerful force for positive change. JAS is an advocate of this approach, as demonstrated by our commitment to the Bruni Foundation's "Pay It Forward" program.

Corporate volunteering has emerged as a potent force for positive change in recent years. Companies are increasingly recognizing their role in supporting local communities and contributing to the greater good.

At JAS, we are advocates for this transformative approach, and our commitment is exemplified through the Bruni Foundation's "Pay It Forward" program.

The Significance of Corporate Volunteering

Corporate volunteering transcends charity; it embodies corporate responsibility and a commitment to making a meaningful impact beyond the company's direct business and operations. Companies possess the unique capacity to leverage their resources and expertise to support causes that matter most to the communities they serve. This proactive approach aligns with a broader vision of corporate citizenship, where social and environmental stewardship are integral components of a company's identity.

The Bruni Foundation: A Catalyst for Change

The Bruni Foundation is an integral part of JAS Worldwide, and its mission around supporting social and environmental causes. Rooted in the belief that businesses should be agents of positive change, the foundation primarily focuses on four key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education, No Poverty, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Zero Hunger. Yet, understanding the essential role and current challenges towards the environment and the well-being of societies, the Bruni Foundation also actively supports initiatives that promote responsible environmental stewardship.

Under the Bruni Foundation's guiding principles, the "Pay It Forward" program empowers JAS employees to take the lead in becoming ambassadors of change. We encourage and provide resources and support for their volunteer proposals. Moreover, employees can use up to 16 hours of their working time to carry out these projects. We aim to cultivate a culture of empathy, social responsibility, and community engagement within our organization and beyond.

In Times of Crisis: The Need for Corporate Volunteering

During times of crisis, such as the challenges posed by environmental degradation and social inequalities, the "Pay It Forward" program takes on even greater significance going forward. The Bruni Foundation recognizes the importance of supporting the communities and environment in which JAS operates. By doing so, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond our organization.

JAS Worldwide proudly hosted nearly 30 students and faculty from Auburn University and Clark Atlanta University earlier this month for an immersive educational experience. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable insights into the industry through behind-the-scenes tours and engaging presentations.

One highlight of the day was an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into air cargo operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta's International's Cargo Terminal, one of the busiest cargo hubs in the United States. There, students were able to witness the unloading of air cargo from an Air Canada Cargo plane, providing a firsthand look at the precision and efficiency required in global logistics operations.

Additionally, students and faculty were able to step onto the aircraft and explore its interior setup. This rare opportunity allowed them to better understand the intricacies of cargo loading and unloading, emphasizing the importance of logistics in the aviation industry.

Following the air cargo tour, participants were treated to an informative visit to an AGI warehouse, gaining insights into warehousing and distribution processes. Additionally, students were given a demonstration showcasing how K9s at the warehouse help detect illegal items such as explosives coming into the United States. This hands-on experience helped students connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications in supply chain management.

The educational day continued with a visit to the JAS Worldwide campus in Atlanta, where students enjoyed lunch and a Q&A session with JAS leadership and representatives from Air Canada. The students had the chance to engage in meaningful discussions and gain valuable industry perspectives.

This day marked a significant opportunity for the students of Auburn University and Clark Atlanta University to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical industry knowledge. JAS Worldwide remains committed to fostering the growth and development of future leaders in the supply chain and logistics field.

"As leaders in the aviation community, it is incumbent upon us to invest in the leaders of tomorrow and promote their stewardship," said Jared Azcuy, CEO of AGI. "We were honored to welcome students from Auburn and Clark Atlanta into our facilities and grateful that JAS gave us the opportunity to participate."
"We are delighted to have partnered with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, AGI, Global K9 Protection Group, and Air Canada cargo to host these students from Auburn University and Clark Atlanta University for this educational day," added Matthias Frey, VP Airfreight Operations, JAS Worldwide. "We believe in investing in the future of our industry by providing students with valuable experiences that will prepare them for successful careers in logistics and supply chain management."
