JAS Worldwide recently participated in TPM24, an event held in Long Beach, CA, where industry leaders converged to discuss the future of logistics and maritime shipping. Among the event's highlights was the joint presentation between JAS and Wesco, focusing on their collaborative efforts towards decarbonization in the industry.

TPM, or Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference, serves as a platform for key stakeholders in the shipping industry to exchange insights, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities. At TPM24 Shipper's Day, JAS Worldwide and Wesco shared their experiences in a joint panel discussion titled "First Steps: A Case Study in Developing a Decarbonization Plan".

During this session, Jim Bonsteel, VP Transportation, Customs and Trade Coordination at Wesco, and Andrea Goeman, Senior Vice President of QHSE & Sustainability at JAS Worldwide, delved into the journey towards decarbonization. Moderated by Alexander Nowroth, the discussion offered a comprehensive view of the decarbonization process within logistics Scope 3 emissions. The presentation showcased the collaboration journey from 2018 to today, starting from measuring carbon emissions to reducing them.

A key theme reiterated throughout the session was the fundamental role of partnerships in driving sustainable change. Andrea Goeman emphasized, "I firmly believe that choosing the right partners is key to making a change," underscoring the importance of collaboration and shared values in addressing industry-wide challenges.

Jim Bonsteel mentioned, "Driving progress in sustainability is about being an advocate – you have to embrace the topic in your overall logistics decision-making to go from crawling to standing up and walking."

"The presentation received positive feedback from other shippers and stakeholders who are starting on the sustainability journey," highlighted Lars Huebecker, EVP Global Head of Ocean Freight at JAS. "Our focus on sustainability within our ocean freight operations not only influences industry practices but also underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility," added Lars.

While recent years have presented significant challenges for many industries, such as the recent disruptive impact of geopolitics, the unprecedented supply chain disruptions during COVID-19, and labor actions at major seaports, the pursuit of sustainability is viewed as an enduring journey rather than a short-lived endeavor. This perception highlights the ongoing commitment required to create a meaningful change in the logistics ecosystem.

JAS Worldwide extends its appreciation to all participants and organizers of TPM 2024 for fostering meaningful discussions, providing valuable industry insights, and inspiring innovative initiatives. Moving forward, JAS Worldwide remains committed to fostering collaborative partnerships and advancing sustainable practices, driving positive change in the global maritime shipping and logistics landscape.

JAS Hong Kong, with support from partners, repurposed donated factory fabric samples to clothe adults and children in need, reducing fashion waste.
Dressing with Purpose: JAS Hong Kong's Clothing Drive for Sustainable Change

A dedicated team of JAS Hong Kong employees, led by Sustainability Ambassador Gary Ferreira, came together to make an impact in the lives of those less fortunate. Their mission? To repurpose factory fabric samples generously donated by a department store and instead give them to adults and children in need – the impact was twofold – it clothed adults and children in need and reduced waste sent to a landfill.

The JAS employees started by detaching company labels from each item. They then sorted and packaged the fabrics to ensure the garments could be easily distributed to charitable organizations in Hong Kong and the Philippines. The act of kindness was met with smiling and thankful faces.

This collaboration not only helped address material needs but also contributed to reducing fashion waste. This initiative underscores how corporate entities can address social and environmental challenges by leveraging existing resources and expertise.

We are grateful for our retail partner, Inland Corporation, and the Bruni Foundation for their support in ensuring each item reached its intended recipients with care and efficiency. Such achievements are only possible through collective cross-industry efforts.

This initiative is part of the Bruni Foundation's 'Pay it Forward' program, which empowers JAS employees to become ambassadors of change by actively supporting social and environmental causes. Throughout the year, the Bruni Foundation, an integral part of JAS, will support various global projects, primarily focusing on these United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education, No Poverty, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Zero Hunger. Yet, understanding the current challenges towards the environment and the well-being of societies, the Bruni Foundation also actively supports initiatives that promote responsible environmental stewardship.

In an exciting partnership, Inter Campus is teaming up with the Bruni Foundation, the philanthropic arm of JAS Worldwide, to reinforce their efforts in Cambodia and breathe new life into prevention and development activities across the Asian continent.

Together with Missione Possibile and Il Nodo Onlus, the organizations will provide sustained support to clinics, training sessions, and leisure projects that cater to hundreds of children daily, offering them structured recreational opportunities tailored to their unique needs.

The Bruni Foundation shares a deep conviction in the transformative power of sports, viewing it as a catalyst for redemption, protection, and the promotion of human rights, particularly for marginalized communities. This aligns perfectly with Inter Campus' mission, rooted in the belief that every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves the fundamental Right to Play.

Inter Campus operates as a beacon of hope in local communities, championing educational, social, and health initiatives. Through the universal language of football, they empower children in rural areas worldwide, fostering dialogue, mutual assistance, and teamwork.

As we embark on this collaborative journey, JAS Worldwide and Inter Campus are committed to making a real difference in the lives of Cambodian youth, ensuring they can thrive and realize their full potential, both on and off the pitch.

Setting Sail Towards Sustainability: The Impact of California's Vessel Speed Reduction Program on Blue Whales and Beyond

Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Program along the coast of California which incentivizes companies to incorporate sustainable shipping practices across their global supply chain. By creating seasonal and predictable slow speed zones, this program helps companies protect endangered whales, reduce fuel use and regional greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality and human health outcomes.

The program runs each year from mid-May to December to coincide with peak ozone and whale feeding and migration. The program covers two geographic regions, one along the Southern California coast and one outside the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2014, the program has achieved an estimated 44% decrease in the risk of whale strikes.

As an ambassador, JAS engages with its shipping partners operating in the area, recognizes the shared vision and commitment with those already involved in vessel speed reduction, and further encourages other ocean carriers to participate in the program.

“What makes the BWBS initiative stand out is that it not only addresses carbon emissions, but also safeguards biodiversity. By voluntarily reducing vessel speed (VSR) along the California coast, ocean carriers commit to protecting blue whales and raising industry awareness. JAS supports this initiative and will further engage its logistics partners on the key role whales play in the environment and our responsibility to improve the ocean ecosystem.” -Andrea Goeman, SVP QHSE & Sustainability, JAS Worldwide
“Being an ambassador for the BWBS Program is a great initiative towards more sustainable ocean freight solutions. It is a way to further engage with our carriers, with whom we share values towards a sustainable transformation, and an example of how collaboration can be beneficial for the logistics ecosystem, our customers, and the environment.” -Lars Huebecker, EVP Global Head of Ocean Freight
JAS Colombia and the Bruni Foundation worked with local NGO El Banquete del Bronx to help support the Emberá community.
Caring Connections: JAS Colombia's Support for Indigenous Communities

The Emberá people are an indigenous community primarily residing in Colombia, with approximately 50,000 individuals identifying as part of this group. Due to factors such as armed conflict and mining exploitation in their ancestral territories, many Emberá have been forced to leave and migrate to major cities like Bogotá. Despite some support in the capital city of the country, the Emberá community faces discrimination, and efforts to provide basic necessities such as clean water and food are insufficient.

Women and children in the Emberá community are particularly affected by these challenges. Forced to leave their lands, they grapple with societal indifference, language barriers (as Spanish is not their native language), and the struggle to preserve their cultural identity.

Recognizing the need to support local communities, JAS Colombia collaborated with 'El Banquete del Bronx', a local NGO, to visit one of the Emberá settlements in Bogotá. The activity included providing food, hygiene kits and, above all, sharing moments of joy with the little ones by drawing and playing games. This initiative is part of the Bruni Foundation's 'Pay it Forward' program, which empowers JAS employees to become ambassadors of change by actively supporting social and environmental causes.

The event began with a presentation by the local NGO to JAS employees, aiming to raise awareness about the situation of the Emberá and other minority groups – and the reasons behind their migration to urban areas. The presentation underscored the role of every citizen in bringing some hope, aiding their adaptation process, and, more broadly, fostering respect for ethnic communities.

Addressing some of the challenges women and children face within the Emberá community is only one of the initiatives toward a more inclusive and sustainable future that the Bruni Foundation is committed to. Throughout the year, the Bruni Foundation will support various global projects, primarily focusing on these United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education, No Poverty, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Zero Hunger.

JAS Worldwide, a leading global logistics provider, is proud to announce its partnership with GoodShipping.
JAS Worldwide and GoodShipping Collaborate to Advance Sustainable Logistics and Decarbonization with Sustainable Marine Biofuel

[Atlanta, Oct. 20, 2023 ] — JAS Worldwide, a leading global logistics provider, is proud to announce its partnership with GoodShipping. This collaboration is focused on promoting a more environmentally responsible future for the logistics industry. Through this strategic partnership, JAS aims to make substantial reductions in the industry's carbon footprint by helping to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable marine biofuel solutions.

At JAS, environmental stewardship and the promotion of sustainable logistics are fundamental to our business. JAS’s investment in carbon reduction allows customers to see up to a 100% reduction in CO2e Well-to-Wake emissions when compared to their fossil fuel equivalents. This innovative approach is based on the concept of insetting. When utilizing insetting a customer chooses sustainable biofuel rather than the traditional fossil fuel. This eco-friendly biofuel is a renewable energy source that can power vessels without disrupting logistics operations.

Through the partnership with GoodShipping, JAS now has a carrier-independent solution that can be applied to any trade lane worldwide using the “one atmosphere approach” or “mass balance principle.” This means that if the biofuel supply is unavailable for the specific vessel transporting a customer’s shipment, an equivalent amount of biofuel, corresponding to the emissions generated by the shipment, is utilized in a biofuel enabled vessel. The end result is the same since the atmosphere is indifferent to which vessel is fueled.

The insetting service JAS’s customers can book facilitates the use of biofuel derived from 100% certifiable waste and residue streams. What sets this service apart is its independent audit verification process, which confirms the quality of the biofuel and ensures accurate carbon accounting. Through this approach, JAS strives to reduce actual emissions from its operations and help customers reduce Scope 3 emissions within their supply chain.

This partnership offers numerous advantages to cargo owners:

  • Simple: The mass balance principle and the blend of biofuels with conventional fossil fuels provide a carrier-independent solution with minimal disruption to logistics operations.
  • Impactful: Biofuel Insetting offers an immediate response within the same sector where emissions originate, enabling an effective reaction to global warming.
  • Credible: The utilization of biofuels aligns with global sustainability goals, and third-party audits ensure that sustainability claims are accurate and backed by credible assessments.
Andrea Goeman, SVP Sustainability, JAS Worldwide shared: "JAS Worldwide and GoodShipping are united in the mission to reduce carbon emissions to zero with Sustainable Marine Biofuel. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and to extend this decarbonization product to road transport, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainability in our customers' supply chain."
“We’re very happy to have started collaborating with an international player like JAS Worldwide,” says Alessandro Pierangeli, Commercial Manager at GoodShipping. Through our partnership, we can collectively offer companies a unique way to decarbonize their Scope 3 transportation emissions. We are truly excited to make a long term impact together.”

About JAS Worldwide:

JAS was founded in 1978 in Milan, Italy, and its global headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Over the last four decades, JAS has grown from regional roots to a global force in logistics covering all modes of transportation, including contract logistics and other sophisticated and digital-driven supply chain solutions. About GoodShipping:

GoodShipping accelerates the decarbonisation of shipping. GoodShipping enables companies to make an immediate climate impact by decarbonising their scope 3 emissions. Being world’s leading sustainable cargo initiative, GoodShipping facilitates a switch from fossil fuel to sustainable biofuel through an innovative concept called carbon insetting. This is based on the one atmosphere approach – the concept that all carbon is emitted into the same atmosphere. Any carrier running on biofuel, is a reduction of fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere. Therefore, it doesn’t matter which carrier runs on biofuel. The independent third-party audit ensures the clients' decarbonisation commitments are delivered. GoodShipping is proud to be part of FincoEnergies. Together delivering sustainable energy solutions to propel our customers’ transition towards a better world.

JAS' commitment to environmentally friendly solutions has led to successful partnerships with manufacturers, suppliers, and customers, resulting in mutual benefits, and its latest venture into electric trucks, showcases its dedication to driving positive change.
